I love all the little 'traditions' that go along with the begining of school! Grandma B takes the school kid (s) out for shopping and lunch. I take anyone who's willing to practice photography and get before-school-begins photos. Resolutions are made - like 'we will hold family home evening more consistently this year' and 'I will go outside daily, but to/from car and mail runs don't count' and 'I will let Evie be more participatory in her school decisions'. (It was terrible that last year I was really controlling about how her hair had to be done, what clothes she chose and what she ate. Trying to release a little.)
This year, Evie and I took her school pictures both in our backyard and just past the neighbor's house on the railroad tracks.
Later, I took Lizzie to Grandma B's and on our way, we noticed that the water tower was being repainted - those guys look so tiny up there!
Lizzie and I stopped in Prospect Hill, a tiny historic village between our home and Grandma's. I've been wanting to take pictures there for some time, but either had no camera, no kids, too many kids, or no time. This day was perfect! Just Lizzie, camera in hand, leisurely trip. Also, Lizzie is not in school this year; our elementary school has no 4-K program and she is far from making the cutoff. So she and I will spend another year doing preschool crafts and simple learning!
The cute curly-ques in both their hairstyles are so fun! I got them after they got their haircuts at JC Penney's so we would have something exciting for the beginning of school.
The first day of 1st grade finally arrived! Evie was so ready to walk out that door and climb onto the bus, happy to greet her familiar bus driver and some friends.
I wanted to get to the first PTO meeting of the year, so after I saw Evie off to school, I fed Cole and took him with me to her school. (The two middles stayed home, where Aaron was up and getting ready to work on the bathroom remodel. They were content to play PBS kids until I got back.) Even though Evie was picked up early, and I didn't hurry out the door after her, I still beat her to the school. (That's with parking dilemas!) I grabbed her before she sat for a quick picture.
I was just so excited to do this in her hair! It was in a small group of styles she was willing to let me try and I love it! It's a smaller version of the laced French braids we did last year, and I think I like this variation so much better.
Happy First Day of 1st Grade, Evie girl!

The girls are getting so big! Which tends to happen, I know, but still... My boys have a rule about the school clothes. They can't have holes in the knee of their jeans unless EVERYTHING else is in the dirty pile. And socks must be worn with shoes. :-) I think I've learned to pick my battles with them, and clothes are one thing I had to let go of early. As moms, that's a really hard thing to do though, and I still have a hard time letting them do other things. That'll probably stay true until I die! LOL
